Under OCGA 17-10-3, every crime declared to be a misdemeanor shall be punished (1) by a fine not to exceed $1,000.00 or by confinement in the county or other jail, for a total term not to exceed 12 months, or both;

For instance, DUI, Theft by Shoplifting, Simple Battery, or Disorderly Conduct are ordinarily charged as misdemeanors.

Per OCGA 16-1-3(5), a "Felony" means a crime punishable by death, by imprisonment for life, or by imprisonment for more than 12 months, additionally a "Forcible felony" means any felony which involves the use or threat of physical force or violence against any person. OCGA16-1-3(6).

For Instance, Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, False Imprisonment, and Aggravated Battery are ordinarily charged as felony charges.

Under OCGA 15-11-7, Juvenile court shall have exclusive original jurisdiction over juvenile matters and shall be the sole court for initiating action: (1) Concerning any child who:

(A) Is alleged to be a delinquent child;(B) Is alleged to be a child in need of services; (C) Is alleged to be a dependent child; (D) Is alleged to be in need of treatment or commitment as a mentally ill or developmentally disabled child; (E) Has been placed under the supervision of the court or on probation to the court; (F) Is receiving extended care youth services; (G) Requires a comprehensive services plan; 2) Concerning any individual under the age of 17 years alleged to have committed a juvenile traffic offense

Per OCGA 17-10-1, Probation as (A) "Active probation supervision" means the period of a probated sentence in which a probationer actively reports to his or her community supervision officer or is otherwise under the direct supervision of a community supervision officer.

Parole refers to the release of an inmate to the community by the Parole Board before the end of the inmate's confinement portion of their sentence.
